ECEN 404 Electrical Design Laboratory II

College: College of Engineering
Department: Electrical and Computer Engineering
Type: C
Status: Approved

REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF C COURSE: ECEN 404

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/22 to 9/1/26

We recommend that ECEN 404 Electrical Design Laboratory II be certified as a Communication (C) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 35% of the final grade is based on writing and speaking quality; (2) the total number of words is 3000; (3) the total minutes of performance are 30; (4) the instructor to student ratio is 1:30; and (5) the assigned writing and speaking are appropriate to the major.

Eight graduate assistants and five faculty work with the 16 sections of ECEN 404. Students complete six presentations and speak for five minutes in each of them. The writing consists of slides for these presentations and a poster for the final presentation, with a minimum word count for each individual and each presentation, although the work is presented in groups. Because there are six presentations of the same type, formative feedback can occur between presentations, with feedback from one being applied to the next. Instruction is provided through examples, including videos of previous student presentations from this class. In addition, students are provided with slides describing effective presentation preparation and templates.
