ECEN 403 Electrical Design Laboratory I
College: College of Engineering
Department: Electrical and Computer Engineering
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: ECEN 403
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/22 to 9/1/26
We recommend that ECEN 403 Electrical Design Laboratory I be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 62% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 9000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:13; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
At least one graduate assistant helps with each section of this course. This course is grandfathered for collaboration, but all the words counted above are for individual work. Students write two midterm reports and a final report, all appropriate to the discipline. The midterm reports are folded into a final collaborative report and revised as needed. They also contribute another 3000 words, 1000 for a new section (ICD) and about 2000 for their part of the collaborative sections, and they help edit each other’s contributions. Feedback includes continuous feedback during the first 4-6 weeks of lab time as they develop their projects, review by the graduate assistant and instructor of early drafts, and as needed conferences with the graduate assistant. Instruction includes provision of a template and examples and a presentation on technical writing by the University Writing Center.
