We recommend that ECCB 285 Directed Studies be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 80% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:2; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
ECCB 285 is a one-credit course in which students write a professional paper in ecology and conservation biology. The instructor approves the topic. An outline and a draft of the paper are given written feedback by the instructor. Instruction is given on writing a technical/scientific paper.
