CVEN 424 Civil Engineering Professional Practice

College: College of Engineering
Department: Civil Engineering
Type: W
Status: Approved

REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: CVEN 424

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/24 to 1/1/28

We recommend that CVEN 424 Civil Engineering Professional Practice be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 55% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2197; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:20; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

CVEN 424 is a two-credit course. It is grandfathered for collaborative writing. Writing assignments are two professional memos and a proposal. Minor assignments contribute to practice but are not counted in the totals above. The memos are completed as individual writing, and the proposal is written collaboratively. Both memos and the proposal are given formative feedback in conference with an instructor they are working with on a project. There is also time built into the schedule for in-class peer editing for each assignment. Three class periods minimum are devoted entirely to writing instruction and include sample papers, lectures on writing topics, and ungraded, low-stakes exercises.
