REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: CVEN 207
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/22 to 9/1/26
We recommend that CVEN 207 Introduction to the Civil Engineering Profession be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 50% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2300; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:13; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
CVEN 207 is a 2-credit course, and a graduate student assists the instructor. Students write a memo related to options such as requesting funding, confirming job details, or making suggestions about a current process. They also write a job packet that includes a cover letter, resume, and thank you note, and they write a proposal about solving a wicked problem. Before assignments are submitted for a final grade, they are peer reviewed. One-to-one coaching is available. Students have the option to rewrite and resubmit a memo for an improved grade.
