REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: CSCE 491
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/25 to 9/1/29
We recommend that CSCE 491 Research be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 80% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 5,500; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:1; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
CSCE 491’s individual writing component consists of two installment drafts of a thesis, plus the final thesis. Formative feedback is provided throughout the course on the thesis by the instructor via the drafts and discussion, as well as through participation in the Undergraduate Scholars Research Program. Writing instruction will focus on the sub-discipline related to the student’s thesis, and students will attend at least one writing workshop.
