CSCE 491 Research

College: College of Engineering
Department: Computer Science and Engineering
Type: W
Status: Approved

REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: CSCE 491

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/21 to 9/1/25

We recommend that CSCE 491 Research be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 60% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:1; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

CSCE 491 is a research class taken with a faculty member. It requires a thesis of at least 2000 words.
Faculty mentors are notified in writing of expectations to provide formative feedback on drafts and must sign a document outlining these expectations for the student to register for the course. Faculty also provide some writing instruction specific to writing the thesis, and students are required to attend one workshop delivered by the department.
