CSCE 331 Foundations of Software Engineering
College: College of Engineering
Department: Computer Science and Engineering
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: CSCE 331
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/24 to 1/1/28
We recommend that CSCE 331 Foundations of Software Engineering be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 62% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2350; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:30; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
CSCE 331 is a 4-credit course with two graduate assistants per section. For Project 1, students write two iterations of a write-up, one being an ungraded draft; for project 2, they write a mid-term status report and an end-project status report with reflection; and for project 3, they write a problem exploration, a status report, and an end-project status report with reflection. These are all individually assessed but are related to major team projects. Formative feedback is given through instructor comments on the first version of the Project 1 write-up and subsequently through peer review on the other assignments. There is a writing-focused lecture, including samples.
