REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: COSC 494
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/24 to 9/1/28
We recommend that COSC 494 Internship be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 81.25% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 9,400 (minus the presentation slides); (3) the instructor to student ratio is 11:175; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
COSC 494’s writing component consists of nine weekly reports, a monthly progress report, a final internship report, and an internship completion letter. Formative feedback is provided via the weekly reports, where comments on initial reports are meant to be applied to subsequent reports. Writing instruction is provided via a writing guide that all students are issued on Canvas, as well as a breakdown of rubrics.
