REPORT ON CERTIFICATION OF C COURSE: COSC 443
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/21 to 9/1/25
We recommend that COSC 443 Industrial Capstone be certified as a Communication (C) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 34% of the final grade is based on writing and speaking quality; (2) the total number of words is 1250; (3) the total minutes of performance are 6; (4) the instructor to student ratio is 1:13; and (5) the assigned writing and speaking are appropriate to the major.
A teaching assistant helps with this course, and it is grandfathered for collaboration. Students write an essay and do a presentation for a team project as well as an individual presentation. Formative feedback for the team presentation is a rehearsal in front of the instructor; the individual presentation is rehearsed outside of class in front of a peer; the essay is peer reviewed. Instruction includes review of grammar and construction industry writing style and formatting and tips on speaking publicly such as appropriate clothing, tone, and use of visual aids.
