COSC 440 Interdisciplinary Capstone
College: Architecture
Department: Construction Science
Type: C
Status: Approved
REPORT ON CERTIFICATION OF C COURSE: COSC 440
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/21 to 9/1/25
We recommend that COSC 440 Interdisciplinary Capstone be certified as a Communication (C) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 34% of the final grade is based on writing and speaking quality; (2) the total number of words is 1500; (3) the total minutes of performance are 6; (4) the instructor to student ratio is 1:13; and (5) the assigned writing and speaking are appropriate to the major.
This course is grandfathered for collaboration. A teaching assistant helps with grading. Students present one team project presentation (each being required to speak for 3 minutes) and one individual presentation about their construction internship experience. They individually write an essay about their experience in the construction industry and what they learned concerning team dynamics, as related to The Five Dysfunctions of a Team. The team project presentation is rehearsed and given written and verbal instructor feedback before a final presentation in front of judges. They also rehearse their individual presentation with a peer and receive both written and oral feedback. The essay is peer reviewed. Instruction includes review of grammar, construction industry writing style and formatting, and delivery tips for the presentation such as how to dress, use visual aids, and handle Q&A. Students get additional practice and feedback by writing 10 in-class essays.
