COMM 438 Propaganda
College: Arts and Sciences
Department: Communication
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: COMM 438
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/21 to 9/1/25
We recommend that COMM 438 Propaganda be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 70% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 6200; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:24; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
Students write four papers leading up to a final propaganda analysis research paper, starting with a topic declaration followed by a review of research, a plan for methods, and an analysis of primary sources. Each of these is graded to provide feedback relevant to the final write-up, and students have the option to revise and re-submit any assignment in response to instructor feedback. Each day is devoted to discussing writing assignments in progress. Topics covered include discussion on how to write a research paper and reviewing many examples of propaganda analysis over the course of the semester.
