REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: CHEN 433
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/25 to 1/1/29
We recommend that CHEN 433 Chemical Engineering Laboratory II be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 65% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 6,500; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:18; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
CHEN 433’s individual writing component consists of four written experiment reports and a safety report article. Formative feedback is provided via peer reviews and instructors comments for each of the assignments prior to final submission. Writing instruction is provided over multiple course periods by the instructor and a course manual. Students are provided with models of good writing and UWC resources are brought in to the course.
