CHEN 432 Chemical Engineering Laboratory I
College: College of Engineering
Department: Chemical Engineering
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: CHEN 432
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/22 to 9/1/26
We recommend that CHEN 432 Chemical Engineering Laboratory I be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 55% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 6500; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:10; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
CHEN 432 is a two-credit course and graduate assistants help with it. Writing assignments include three lab reports, a safety report, and three reflection reports. Students also write two more reports and use Peerceptiv software to review them (not counted in the totals above) to get practice both in collaboration and in peer review. The Safety Report is peer reviewed using Peerceptiv; in addition, since they write nine total reports, all similar in style and format, the comments on each can be used to improve the next. Students have the opportunity to meet with the instructor to discuss their reports at any stage prior to final grading for review and feedback. Instruction includes a full lecture devoted to writing a formal introduction and the provision of a departmental writing guide that is included in the first exam.
