BUSN 101 Freshman Business Initiative
College: Mays Business School
Department: Mays Business School
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON CERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: BUSN 101
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/22 to 1/1/26
We recommend that BUSN 101 Freshman Business Initiative be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 33% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
The student-to-instructor ratio is 1:25 counting only instructors, but eight undergraduate assistants also help with the various sections of the course. The faculty evaluate the writing, which includes two assignments tailored to majors. The first one is tailored to marketing, supply chain management, and management information systems; the second is tailored to accounting, finance, and management. Both of these are peer reviewed for formative feedback. Two lectures cover writing, and videos on writing also available as supplemental resources.
