BMEN 450 Case Studies
College: College of Engineering
Department: Biomedical Engineering
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: BMEN 450
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/21 to 9/1/25
We recommend that BMEN 450 Case Studies be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 80% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 3500; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:17; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
BMEN 450 is a one-credit-hour course that uses two graduate assistants. There are three writing assignments, including a product case study as a longer paper. Besides being available for any assignment for formative feedback during office hours, students peer review a draft of the product case study, for which they receive training. For instruction, besides the peer review training, students examine and discuss models, share writing strategies, and are assigned readings on writing. Students are encouraged to use the University Writing Center and are also provided the opportunity to revise and resubmit graded papers for additional feedback, although grades are not changed.
