CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/23 to 1/1/27
We recommend that BMEN 153 Pathways in Biomedical Engineering be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 95% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 3100; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
BMEN 153 is a one-credit course. Students write a resume and cover letter, a review of user needs, a literature search, an ethics case study, a write-up of a poster session, a write-up regarding professional ethics, a reflection on a panel presentation, and participate in a written discussion of current topics. The instructor provides written comments on a draft of the assignment on professional ethics. Instruction includes referral to readings and web sites about writing and discussion of examples.
