REPORT ON CERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: BIOL 443
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/23 to 1/1/27
We recommend that BIOL 443 Origin of Species be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 35% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
Students write a final report related to a course project. Sections of the project are turned in throughout the semester, including an outline with references in week 9, an introduction in week 12, and a draft in week 13 that is returned in week 14 with written formative feedback from the instructor. Besides detailed instructions for the project and these checks during the semester, week 2 includes instruction on writing in the discipline.
