BIOL 403 Medical Narratives

College: Arts and Sciences
Department: Biology
Type: W
Status: Approved

REPORT ON CERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: BIOL 403

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/23 to 1/1/27

We recommend that BIOL 403 Medical Narratives be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 75% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2250; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:17; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

BIOL 403 is a one-credit course, with 1 graduate assistant per two sections. Writing includes the analysis of a medical narrative, the write-up of an interview with a biomedical professional, and a medical narrative. For each of these assignments, students will receive formative feedback on drafts from peers and from the graduate assistant. When needed, the instructor will also provide this feedback. Instruction includes the assignment and discussion of models and readings in the discipline, low stakes writing assignments that allow for reflection on writing strategies, and lectures on concision, clarity, correctness, and completeness.
