Department: Veterinary Integrative Biosciences
Type: C
Status: Approved

REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF C COURSE: BIMS 481

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/22 to 9/1/26

We recommend that BIMS 481 Seminar in Biomedical Science be certified as a Communication (C) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 75% of the final grade is based on writing and speaking quality; (2) the total number of words is 1500; (3) the total minutes of performance are 21; (4) the instructor to student ratio is 1:12; and (5) the assigned writing and speaking are appropriate to the major.

BIMS 481 is a 1-credit course that assigns a literature review, individual parts of a group mini-presentation, and a seminar presentation. For the literature review the topic is approved by the instructor via a conference, and students receive written instructor feedback on an outline and draft and get peer review comments as well. The mini-presentations provide low-stakes practice in speaking with slides that prepares students for the seminar paper; in addition, they deliver a dry run of the seminar presentation for the instructor. Instruction includes video lectures and readings on topics related to writing and presenting scientific information.
