Type: W
Status: Approved

REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: BAEN 480

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/21 to 9/1/25

We recommend that BAEN 480 Biological and Agricultural Engineering Design II be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 40% of the final grade is based on individual writing quality, and 30% is collaborative; (2) the total number of words is 39,000 total with 13,000 being individually written; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

This is a co-taught course with one graduate assistant. It is grandfathered for collaborative writing. Individuals students each write six progress memos and two sections of a collaboratively written, final design report. Collaboratively written progress memos are also turned in. Formative feedback occurs both for groups and for individuals in weekly meetings. During these meetings, individual sections of the reports are submitted as drafts for review of the writing by their team project manager. Instruction occurs during weekly team meetings and follows a rubric that students are familiar with.
