ATMO 459 Tropical Meteorology
College: Geosciences
Department: Atmospheric Sciences
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: ATMO 459
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/25 to 1/1/29
We recommend that ATMO 459 Tropical Meteorology be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 35% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2,750; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:20; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
ATMO 459’s writing component consists of weekly homework assignments and a term paper. Students receive formative feedback on the term paper via an ungraded topic proposal with references and an ungraded rough draft, both of which the instructor returns with written comments. The instructor also meets for 30 minutes with each student individually to go over drafts. Writing instruction consists of in-class exercises (minute papers), discussion of grammar and style concepts via Strunk and White, and discussions on how to critically read scientific papers.
