AREN 200 Architectural Engineering Foundations

College: College of Engineering
Department: Multidisciplinary Engineering
Type: C
Status: Approved

REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: AREN 200

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/24 to 9/1/28

We recommend that AREN 200 Architectural Engineering Foundations be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 50% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2,200; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

AREN 200’s writing component consists of a professional goals essay, two post-interview essays, a professional development plan essay, and a green building project final essay. Students will receive formative feedback on the green building essay via submitting an ungraded rough draft, a peer review workshop, and final comments by the instructor before submitting. Both formative feedback and writing instruction will take place through formal workshops in class where the instructor offers guidance, online interactive writing modules are set up on Canvas, and students will have time to work with one another. For online sections, instructors will record lectures on writing instruction for these class days.
