AREN 401 Architectural Engineering Design I
College: College of Engineering
Department: Multidisciplinary Engineering
Type: C
Status: Approved
REPORT ON CERTIFICATION OF C COURSE: AREN 401
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/22 to 1/1/26
We recommend that AREN 410 Architectural Engineering Design I be certified as a Communication (C) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 52% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 1250; (3) the total minutes of performance is 5; (4) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (5) the assigned writing and speaking are appropriate to the major.
AREN 401 requires that students give a semester-end presentation on a design project and write a paper about the requirements for their project design and an explanation of the basis for the design. While the students work in teams on the design, each is required to present for at least 5 minutes individually and to prepare any related materials for the presentation. The presentations are delivered in practice form so that the instructor can give feedback. Each student completes the writing project individually, even though they work in groups on the project. These individual documents are integrated into a collaborative final version, giving students practice in collaborative writing. The initial, individually written submissions are given instructor feedback on drafts versions. Three classes cover formal instruction on communication; a workshop on oral presentations including practice presentations followed by reflection and discussion; and a re-cap and reflection sessions covering communications learning outcomes.
