College: Arts and Sciences
Department: Anthropology
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON CERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: ANTH 409
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/25 to 1/1/29
We recommend that ANTH 409 Science, Pseudoscience, and Critical Thinking in Anthropology be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 40% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2,750; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:15; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
ANTH 409’s writing component consists of 15 assigned reading summaries and five critical reflections. Instructor comments on earlier assignments in both categories will apply as formative feedback to later submissions. Writing instruction will occur over multiple class periods in lecture and in-class discussion, as the subject matter deals with critical analysis of academic and popular news articles in anthropology.
