ANSC 498 Animal Science Capstone

College: Agriculture and Life Sciences
Department: Animal Science
Type: W
Status: Approved

REPORT ON CERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: ANSC 498

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/23 to 1/1/27

We recommend that ANSC 498 Animal Science Capstone be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 37.5% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 3800; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:20; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

ANSC 498 is a 4-credit course. There is collaborative writing done in the course, but only individual writing is counted above. For individual writing, students complete 14 reflections and a background research report. The reflections are graded and returned so that feedback from one can be used in composing the next. The feedback on the research background report helps with their final collaborative report. Two lab periods are dedicated to writing practices, and two lab periods include discussion of models and in-lab time for practice. Students are also given instruction on peer review for their collaborative writing projects.
