REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: AFST 324

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/24 to 1/1/28

We recommend that AFST 324 Africana Social Studies be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 52% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 6750; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:23; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

The assignments include a summary and evaluation of a reading from film studies, five film analysis essays, a short, topical research review, and a research proposal; the assignments are scaffolded and build up to a final research proposal. Students get instructor feedback on the five analysis essays as each is given feedback to apply to the next one. Additionally, there is peer review on the summary and evaluation assignment, and the short research review. Instruction includes prewriting activities such as notetaking, listing, or diagramming; help with proofreading, and critical thinking guidance relevant to their assignments. Students also create an annotated bibliography to help them with their research.
