REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF C COURSE: AERO 401

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/24 to 9/1/28

We recommend that AERO 401 Aerospace Design Principles be certified as a Communication (C) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 90% of the final grade is based on writing and speaking quality; (2) the total number of words is 2,200; (3) the total minutes of performance is 5; (4) the instructor to student ratio is 1:22.5; and (5) the assigned writing and speaking are appropriate to the major.

AERO 401’s writing component consists of a system requirements review document, a system definition review document, and a preliminary design review document. The speaking component consists of a system definition review presentation and a preliminary design review presentation; the individual speaking times for each are 2 and 3 minutes, respectively. Students receive formative feedback on their SDR oral presentation and their PDR paper via instructor comments on ungraded drafts that the students submit prior to the final deadlines. Writing and speaking instruction take place over several class periods before and after the SDR paper and presentations are due, with a focus on specific writing topics prior to submitting the assignments and summative feedback after they are submitted.
