ACCT 407 Auditing
College: Mays Business School
Department: Accounting
Type: W
Status: Approved
REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: ACCT 407
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/24 to 9/1/28
We recommend that ACCT 407 Auditing be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 33% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of individual words is 2,500; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:16; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
ACCT 407’s individual writing components consist of four email assignments, an ethics assignment, an independence case, and a final memo. Students receive writing instruction via a larger lecture in the first week of class, mini-lessons in subsequent classes, with models and student paper examples used as support. The instructor also reviews rubrics and assignments sheets. Formative feedback consists of instructor feedback on the first email assignment applying to subsequent assignments, early stage writing assignments for the first essay (independence case), a deadline for students to submit drafts for additional feedback on both major assignments before the final paper is due, or making appointments with the graduate TA or the instructor.
