ANTH 401 Ice Age Humans in North America

College: Arts and Sciences
Department: Anthropology
Type: W
Status: Approved

REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: ANTH 401

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/21 to 1/1/25

We recommend that ANTH 401 Ice Age Humans in North America be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 35% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2600; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:16; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

There are two writing assignments, a site report and an extinctions report. An outline, bibliography, and first draft of each paper will receive written instructor comments, and the student will be encouraged to conference with the instructor about the revisions. For instruction, an article about scientific writing is assigned, and two half-lectures are devoted to scientific writing. Students also read several scientific journal articles and book chapters throughout the semester.
