REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: ANTH 350
CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/21 to 9/1/25
We recommend that ARCH 350 Archeology of the Old World be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 63% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 5500; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
Students write three papers related to course context, with the third being a reflection on how ancient societies have similarities to the modern world. On the first two papers, the instructor provides written comments, and they are peer reviewed. Instruction includes discussion of the requirements for assignment with examples and discussion about what works best and the appropriate writing process.
