Department: Animal Science

Status: Approved

REPORT ON CERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: ANSC 447

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/22 to 1/1/26

We recommend that ANSC 447 Advanced Meat Science and Technology be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 25% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2500; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:15; and (5) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

ANSC 447 is a 4-credit course, and the instructor is assisted by two graduate students. Students write 10 weekly lab reports individually. They collaborate to write a final, comprehensive lab report and to present findings (not included in the word count or percentage of the final grade, above). For feedback, weekly lab reports are graded and returned before the next is due. A week of instruction is devoted to scientific writing at the end of the semester.
