REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF C COURSE: ANSC 412

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/21 to 1/1/25

We recommend that ANSC 412 Swine Production and Management be certified as a Communication (C) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 26.7% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2500; (3) the total minutes of performance is 6; (4) the instructor to student ratio is 1:15; and (5) the assigned writing and speaking are appropriate to the major.

ANSC 412 is a 4-credit hour course. Students write 2 summaries of scientific articles and an extension project. They do a presentation on the extension project as well. Students complete a draft of the extension project that gets written instructor feedback. The summaries and outline also build up to writing this project up and presenting on it. One of the first laboratory meetings of the class is devoted to writing and communicating Instructor-guided examples and case studies are reviewed to identify how science is translated and communicated into real world results on the farm.
