ALED 340 Survey of Leadership Theory

College: Agriculture and Life Sciences
Department: Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communications
Type: C
Status: Approved

REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF C COURSE: ALED 340

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 1/1/22 to 1/1/26

We recommend that ALED 340 Survey of Leadership Theory be certified as a Communication (C) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 50% of the final grade is based on writing and speaking quality; (2) the total number of words is 2000; (3) the total minutes of performance is 5; (4) the instructor to student ratio is 1:13; and (5) the assigned writing and speaking are appropriate to the major.

A graduate teaching assistant grades the speaking and writing for each section of the course. Writing assignments include a leadership review and presentation and an analysis of leadership theory. A presentation is given on the leadership review. The analysis paper is peer reviewed, and students are encouraged to meet with the graduate assistant during office hours prior to assignment submission for additional feedback. Students use lab time for formative peer-review of speech outlines. The GAT provides formative evaluation on the speech outline. Instruction includes University Writing Center presentations on writing tips or public speaking or at least one lecture and one lab session to discuss APA writing and citations as well as successful public speaking. There is also a section on Canvas where students can find relevant resources.
