College: College of Engineering
Department: Aerospace Engineering
Type: C
Status: Approved

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/20 to 9/1/24

We recommend that AERO 401 Aerospace Vehicle Design I be certified as a Communication (C) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 75% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2200; (3) the total minutes of performance is 5; (4) the instructor to student ratio is 1:30; and (5) the assigned writing and speaking are appropriate to the major.

Two GATs work with this course. Students work in teams to produce a document but write sections and get formative feedback as individuals. They write a Systems Requirements Review, a System Definition Review, and a Preliminary Design Review. They also present the System Definition Review and the Preliminary Design Review. They get formative feedback on the Preliminary Design Review in draft form and submit a draft of their System Definition Review presentation slides ahead of time with presenter notes. Instructors provide feedback on the slides and notes. Instruction includes modules on how to write each assignment with instruction on common errors and other areas specific to the type of writing.
