AERO 307 Aerospace Engineering Laboratory

College: College of Engineering
Department: Aerospace Engineering
Type: W
Status: Approved

REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: AERO 307

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/21 to 9/1/25

We recommend that AERO 307 Aerospace Engineering Laboratory be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 80% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 4000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

Three graduate assistants help with AERO 307. This course is grandfathered to allow for some collaborative writing, although the individual writing is sufficient to meet the basic requirements. Writing assignments consist of two lab reports and four lab worksheet opening statements (500 words each, 10% each). The lab worksheets are peer reviewed during class. The students in the class identify their own (mutual) peer reviewer and exchange their reports to be commented on by the reviewer via email. Specific guidance is provided for each lab report assignment, including technical information, examples, and discussion. Detailed lab report outlines are given to students to guide their writing.
