College: Agriculture and Life Sciences
Department: Entomology
Type: C
Status: Approved

REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF C COURSE: ENTO 435

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/25 to 9/1/29

We recommend that ENTO 435 Case Studies in Problem Solving be certified as a Communication (C) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 95% of the final grade is based on writing and speaking quality; (2) the total number of individual words is 2,000; (3) the total minutes of individual performance is over 7 minutes; (4) the instructor to student ratio is 1:22; and (5) the assigned writing and speaking are appropriate to the major.

ENTO 435’s writing and speaking components consist of an individual project and two team projects; all of these include a paper and presentation. Students submit and perform an ungraded draft of their first presentation for formative feedback via instructor comments, and students complete peer reviews. Writing and speaking instruction include reviewing models with the instructor, as well as general instructor comments/discussion of student writing in lecture on specific topics, from larger order concerns like organization to smaller ones like grammar and mechanics.
