REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF C COURSE: COSC 441

CERTIFICATION PERIOD: 9/1/25 to 9/1/29                  

We recommend that COSC 441 Residential Capstone be certified as a Communication (C) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 45% of the final grade is based on writing and speaking quality; (2) the total number of words is 1250; (3) the total minutes of performance is 6; (4) the instructor to student ratio is 2:25; and (5) the assigned writing and speaking are appropriate to the major.

COSC 441’s writing component consists of an individual out of class essay; the speaking component consists of an individual presentation and a team project presentation. Students receive formative feedback on the team project presentation via an ungraded rehearsal in front of the instructor (verbal and written comments, the individual presentation via peer review (verbal and written comments), and peer review comments on the essay. Students receive writing instruction through lecture on specific topics like grammar, stylistic conventions in construction writing, and document formatting. Students receive speaking instruction on specific topics including handling Q&A, maintaining eye contact, managing visual aids, and energetic v. lethargic speaking.
