REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: AFST 324

We recommend that AFST 324 Africana Social Sciences be certified as a writing (W) course for four academic years (1/20 to 1/24). We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 35% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 6000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:18; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

When AFST 324 is taught as a W course, a faculty committee will review the syllabus before the semester to ensure that it meets W standards and curricular goals. Student write eight critical reflection responses to course readings, each of which is peer reviewed in draft form. The instructor presents a note-taking strategy to help with pre-writing preparation and provides instructions on answering questions critically, which provides a model for their responses.
