We recommend that ANSC 437 Marketing and Grading of Livestock and Meat be certified as a Communication (C) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 70% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 1500; (3) the total minutes of performance is 5; (4) the instructor to student ratio is 1:15; and (5) the assigned writing and speaking are appropriate to the major.
ANSC 437 is a four-credit course with one graduate assistant. Students write two grid and marketing responses, a breakeven response, and an individual project report. They also speak for five minutes individually in a group presentation about a marketing plan for a program or product relating to livestock/meat. Formative feedback is given on the individual project report, which is turned in as a draft for written instructor/assistant feedback, and the final presentation, which is delivered in a practice format and gets feedback from the assistant before the final version is delivered. Instruction comes through lectures throughout the semester, points about effective written and oral communication, and examples through sources such as TED talks and completed projects.
