REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: ALEC 450
We recommend that ALEC 450 Global Social Justice Issues in Agriculture be certified as a writing (W) course for four academic years (1/20 to 1/24). We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 64% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 3000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:20; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
Students in ALEC 450 write on topics related to the course content; they write a position paper and an analysis, both of which receive written instructor feedback on drafts. Peer-reviews and self-assessments are used for the analysis. Class time is spent on reviewing assignment-specific expectations, and rubrics are provided as a guide.
