We recommend that AGSC 302 Teaching School-Based Agricultural Education & Clinical Professional Experience be certified as a writing (W) course. We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 50% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 4000; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:25; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.
AGSC 302 is a 4-credit course, with a graduate student assigned to assist each section. Students write a short biography and resume; three statements of their philosophies of education, of teaching and learning, and of management; a student handbook; and a portfolio documenting their clinical experiences. The three statements, the handbook, and the portfolio are turned in as drafts and are given written feedback by the instructor or assistant. Small groups provide additional feedback on the portfolio. Instruction includes the use of examples.
