Episode 4 – Video on Tracking Changes in Microsoft Word

September 2007

MANDY: Howdy, I’m Mandy and welcome to a special edition of “Write Right,” the student podcast of the University Writing Center at A&M.  Today I’ll be taking you through how to use the track changes feature in Microsoft word to revise yours or someone else’s paper.

To enable the track changes feature in Microsoft Office 2007, click on the review tab and select track changes.  If you’re doing this in an early version of Microsoft Office all of the commands will be the same but it will look a little different.

To correct, delete, or replace a word, simply type as you normal would and the changes will be tracked like this.  When you delete a phrase, the deleted text will show up in a balloon on the right of the document.  If you add a word, the text will show up in another color, most often red, to denote what has been added.  You can also use the spell checker function as you normally do in Word like this.  This will replace the word as usual, this time while tracking changes.

If you want to see a summary of the changes you are making while you’re editing, you can enable the reviewing pane by clicking on the reviewing pane icon here.  You can display the viewing pane vertically or horizontally.

If you’d like to add a comment, select the area where you’d like the comment to appear and click the new comment icon.  Then simply type your comment in the bubble.

After you’re done, you may want to accept or reject changes in your document to do this simply select the change and choose accept or reject in the reviewing toolbar.  You can also accept all changes or reject all changes here after you’ve reviewed them.  You can delete a comment by clicking the delete comment icon, and if you want to delete all comments choose the delete all comments option here.

Thank you for joining us for this special edition of “Write Right,” for more information about the writing center or how to make an appointment with one  of our consultants please visit our website at www.writingcetner.tamu.edu.  Thanks and have a great day.
