Episode 15 – Music from Singer-Songwriter Sammy Roberts-Perez
April 2008
MEGHAN: Hello and welcome back to “Write Right,” the Texas A&M University Writing Center’s student podcast. In our last episode I sat down with Sammy Roberts-Perez to talk about her interest in music as well as her work as a singer/songwriter. Today we are going to hear some of that music. Sammy will perform three back to back songs with the accompaniment of her guitar “Mammy Cat.” Take it away Sammy…
Song 1:
[guitar playing]
[singing]
There are times when I feel lonely
call you up and you reject me
I thought that we were really something
I guess I took it too seriously
Cause I’m by myself
as if no one else is there
I feel lonely even though there is a you and me
even so it just seems like you don’t care
I thought that I could make you happy
and now I see that isn’t likely
you say I’m yours but you don’t want me
I’m not important just your having
Cause I’m by myself when I’m with you
as if no one else is there
I feel lonely even though there is a you and me
even so it just seems like you don’t care
Ohhh…the music and the words can’t describe the way you make me feel inside
Cause I’m by myself when I’m with you
as if no one else is there
I feel lonely even though there is a you and me
even so it just feels like you don’t care
Song 2:
[guitar playing]
[singing]
If I close my eyes I can feel the way I used to feel
when you held me close to you and we slept at night
the softness of your skin, the gentle caressing
the sweet tender kisses on my forehead and my lips
Sweet baby, I’m sorry darling that it didn’t work out right
oh sweet baby, if I could I’d sleep in your arms every night
and we’ll sleep forever
I can see that smile above looking in my eyes
I let you see the inside of me
I took off my disguise
You touched me in a way no way that words could ever explain
I feel stupid with this love song cliché but this was real so it’s not the same
Sweet baby, don’t feel bad cause I’m not depressed
oh sweet baby I was the lucky one to be with one of the best
your my friend forever
Sweet baby, I can still feel your lips up against mine
sweet baby, you know I think about you all of the time
sweet baby, how I miss you so oh oh
sweet Baby, why did you have to go
Song 3:
[guitar playing]
[singing]
Purposely I didn’t stop to smell the flowers
not even for a minute or an hour
sometimes you wake up not knowing how you got stuck
keep trying and you’ll get some luck
there’s only so much that you can control
just keep in mind your goal
when things seem real bad just know that it will pass
we all got our shares of doubt
My life is a car, I want to drive far
but now I’m stuck in idle
when I drive up to the sky, I want to go high
but I’m stuck in idle
I’m stuck in by gone
just enjoy the ride yall
all the while
no I’m not moving no time I’m losing
I know I’ll be cruising real soon
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
I’m not sure where I’m gonna go but I can’t get too far if I don’t know
oh I’m uncertain this meandering journey there’s never a need to worry
as long as you learn there’s no need for concern
keep realizing every turn
if you get too fast there might be things you may ask
or drive over broken glass
as long as you go don’t pay mind if it’s too slow
just keep your eyes on the road
My life is a car, I want to drive far
but now I’m stuck in idle
when I drive up to the sky, I want to go high
but I’m stuck in idle,
I’m stuck in by gone
just enjoy the ride yall oh whoa
no I’m not moving, no time I’m losing
I know I’ll be cruising real soon
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
Just sit back enjoy the ride
you’ll be cruising you’ll be fine
keep on trying and in time
you’ll be driving in the sky
Just sit back enjoy the ride
you’ll be cruising you’ll be fine
keep on trying and in time
you’ll be driving in the sky
MEGHAN: The songs Sammy writes are based on life experience. That is what makes them so fresh and alive, and gives people something to relate to. If you’d like to hear more original singer/songwriters you’re in luck because there are many coffee houses and bars in the area that host local talent. Revolutions Cafe, It’s a Grind, The Roasted Bean, and Coffee Station are just a few of them. And if you’ve been inspired to start writing your own music we’re here to help. Here at the Writing Center, on the second floor of Evans Library, we can help you with everything except singing lessons, so come on by for all your writing needs. For you really brave performers out there we can set up a recording and you can be the next singing star on this show. Well thanks for listening; I’m Meghan Wall, hoping you’ll tune in for another exciting episode of “Write Right.”
