Workshop on wikis, blogs

The University Writing Center will host a workshop Jan. 10 on how blogs and wikis can be used as tools for teaching writing.

The UWC is administering a pilot program that includes hosting blogs and wikis for W course instructors and their students. The blogs will be powered by a multiuser version of WordPress, and the wikis will be hosted on MediaWiki. The workshop will provide an overview of how those online technologies work and then will offer strategies for incorporating blogs and wikis into W courses.

“We’ll show you what these systems can do and then we’ll give you some tips on how to use these systems as effective tools for teaching writing,” said UWC Communications Coordinator Brady Creel. “We want instructors to walk away with fresh ideas and enough time to tweak their syllabi before the semester starts.”

The workshop will meet Wednesday, Jan. 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Instructional Technology Services classroom, 004 Heldenfels. Creel and UWC Associate Director Candace Schaefer will lead the workshop.
