UWC hiring good writers as peer writing consultants
Faculty are invited to recommend outstanding undergraduates for jobs as peer writing consultants in the University Writing Center. “The UWC has had remarkable success in having undergraduates help their peers with writing,” said Executive Director Dr. Valerie M. Balester. “We intend to continue that practice, and we ask for faculty help in identifying outstanding student writers who would make good tutors.” Students may apply on their own initiative, too, but they will need a letter of recommendation from a faculty member in their major.
Peer consultants provide support to undergraduates and grad students who visit the UWC for help with their writing. Consultants work one-on-one with students in the UWC. Also, some peer consultants can choose to go work in a W course as an Undergraduate Writing Assistant. Starting pay for peer writing consultants is $8/hour.
Faculty who are teaching writing-intensive (“W”) courses are encouraged to consider nominating an undergrad who they might hire as an undergraduate writing assistant. Students can apply by completing the form.
