Graduate Student Services
The University Writing Center offers graduate students assistance with any writing, including class assignments, CVs, journal articles, theses, or dissertations.
Individual Appointments {make an appointment}
If you are working on any writing project except a thesis or dissertation, you should schedule an individual appointment. Once you schedule an appointment, you will come to the University Writing Center and work privately with a certified consultant for up to 45 minutes. Our consultants are trained to work with all levels of writing. During each appointment, we strive to:
- familiarize you with electronic and print resources available
- equip you with techniques to work independently
- direct you towards the appropriate resources for help, whether that be your advisor, the thesis office, or library services
- help you become the best writer you can be
Dissertation And Thesis Assistance (DATA) {sign up}
If you are writing a thesis or dissertation, our DATA program provides you with one-on-one assistance. You will have the benefit of working with the same consultant for up to ten sessions. Through the DATA program, we will help you:
- design an appointment calendar that works with your schedule and allows at least 48 hours between sessions
- work independently between sessions to improve writing
- engage in proofreading and revising techniques
DATA is designed to help students more than one month away from submission deadline. If you are less than a month away from submission deadlines, you must make individual appointments (above) and you will not see the same consultant each time. You will be linited to ten sessions.
*Please read rules and requirements for this program to sign up.
Graduate Writing Groups
This program is also for graduate students working on a thesis or dissertation. We aim to help you reach your writing goals by providing a strong support network consisting of you, your peers, and the University Writing Center. We help you make progress through support, feedback, goal setting, and accountability. We will provide:
- bimonthly meetings directed by a UWC moderator
- a setting for you to receive feedback from your peers
- opportunities to set and meet your writing goals
