University Writing Center

So that the University Writing Center can serve you better, we ask that you:

• Schedule an appointment. We can sometimes accommodate walk-in clients, but it’s best to have an appointment. We conduct consultations at both our main center in Evans Library and our satellite location in West Campus Library during our operating hours.  You can make an appointment online or call us at 485-1455.
• Think about what type of help you need. You’ll get more out of your session if you come with specific problems to address or questions to ask.
• Bring a copy of the assignment you are working on. It will prove helpful, for both you and our staff, to have the assignment on hand, so we can work together in evaluating how successfully you are completing the project.
• Arrive on time. Consultations typically last from 30 to 45 minutes.
• Visit while you still have ample time to make changes to your work. After the consultation, you’ll probably have new insights into your writing and ideas you want to incorporate into your paper, so leave yourself time to revise.

Graduate students should note that consultations on theses and dissertations are limited to ten. You may arrange these appointments in advance by filling out this form. For other writing assignments, please make an appointment as usual.

Finally, remember that all appointments are regulated by Our Ground Rules:

1. Got a quick question? Visit the front desk. If it will take longer than five minutes to answer, you will need an appointment.
2. We do not discuss grades.
3. Papers you bring to a UWC consultation must be your original work. We can help you learn to document your sources, if you ask.
4. Unless you notify us, your appointment may be forfeited if you are more than five minutes late.
5. It’s up to you to establish the direction and content of the session and be an active participant.
6. Information from a session may be used for research, but your name will not be used without your permission.
7. Consultations are limited to one per day.  Graduate students are limited to no more than 10 consultations for their theses or dissertations.
