REPORT ON PROPOSED W COURSE: HIST 333
We recommend that, HIST 333,
Europe in the Age of Absolutism, be certified as a writing-intensive (W) course for the next four academic years (4/07 to 1/11). We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria:
- Percentage of final grade based on writing quality: 35%
- Course content appropriate to the major
- Total number of words: 2000-3000
- Instructor to student ratio for one section: 1:25
Students receive feedback on their rough drafts in the form of written instructor comments. In addition, the instructor holds a writing laboratory to discuss converting the corrected rough drafts into polished papers and holds extensive office hours for individual consultations. Three full course sections are devoted to writing instruction.
