REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: BIOL 401

We recommend that BIOL 401, Critical Writing in Biology, be certified as a writing-intensive (W) course for the next four academic years (9/08 to 1/13).  We have reviewed the syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria:

1. Percentage of final grade based on writing quality (80%)
2. Course content appropriate to the major
3. Total number of words (4000)
4. Instructor to student ratio for one section: 1:25

The number of graded CPR assignments has been reduced from five to three to allow more time in class for working on the preliminary assignments. However, the total word count has not changed. Students receive feedback in class from their peers and also receive instructor/GTA feedback. Therefore, the CPR essays have been given more assessment before the final submission for graded peer review. No significant changes have been made since original certification was granted.

You don't have to like it

What a writer asks of his reader is not so much to like as to listen.
