Sending Your Students to the University Writing Center

You may request that a consultant visit your class or organization and do a 10-minute presentation.  The consultant will introduce your students to the University Writing Center and the services we offer.  To request a visit, simply fill out a request form.

Our policies for working with undergraduate students are meant to enhance their learning experience. Students using the University Writing Center must agree to the following ground rules.

  1. Got a quick question? Visit the front desk. If it will take longer than five minutes to answer, please make an appointment.
  2. We do not discuss teacher grading policies.
  3. The consultants aren't here to proofread or edit. Instead they will address your proofreading and editing needs and help you to correct your own errors.
  4. Papers brought to the UWC must be original works written by the student requesting help. We can help with documentation if requested.
  5. Unless you notify us, your appointment will be forfeited if you are more than five minutes late.
  6. It's up to you to establish the direction and content of the session.
  7. Information from a session may be used for research, but your name will not be used.
  8. Consultations are limited to one per day.

We suggest a statement like the following on your syllabus. Feel free to copy and paste this one:

The University Writing Center (UWC), located in Evans Library 1.214, offers help to writers at any stage of the writing process including brainstorming, researching, drafting, documenting, revising, and more; no writing concern is too large or too small. These consultations are highly recommended but are not required. While the UWC consultants will not proofread or edit your papers, they will help you improve your proofreading and editing skills. If you visit the UWC, take a copy of your writing assignment, a hard copy of your draft or any notes you may have, as well as any material you need help with. To find out more about UWC services or to schedule an appointment, call 458-1455, visit the web page at writingcenter.tamu.edu, or stop by in person.

The first law of writing

The first law of writing, that law to which all other laws are subordinate, is this: that the words employed shall be such as convey to the reader the meaning of the writer.
